Even though the camp was changing its name, we still enjoyed riffing on time travel. I also wanted to convey the sense of anticipation and evoked the ‘blank canvas’ feeling that I get every year when I arrive in the Black Rock Desert.
Working On A Very Large Scale
This also gave me the chance to make use of my massive 3D model of the region. I spent years gathering good USGS data learning how to translate that into a 3D model. The piece I made covers 10,000 square kilometers of northwest Nevada and has over 100 million polygons. I used the same model in different forms for The Magnificent Simulacra and Aquatica. The full size poster is 10,800 x 14,400 pixels. It took a pool of multiple computers working together more than a week to complete the final render. It took a lot of time and effort, but ultimately It’s About Time ticked a lot of boxes for me, and I’m very happy with the final result.\ I was art director and creator of this particular piece.
